Position Description

ERT is seeking a Coastal Ocean Modeler to use advanced methodologies and approaches to develop and improve storm surge and compound river-coastal flooding products at NOAA National Ocean Service Storm Surge Modeling team. The person filling this role will employ an efficient coastal ocean model (e.g. SCHISM / ADCIRC / FVCOM ) to perform seamless simulation of ocean circulation across creek/ lake/ river/ estuary/ ocean scales as well as performing modeling tests following Unified Forecast System best practices including developing and testing NUOPC cap to interface with other NOAA models.

Responsibilities include: Implement required scripts and software wrappers for automatically constructing input information required by the coastal ocean model for storm surge modeling. Implement workflow to seamlessly couple the coastal ocean model to wave and inland hydrology models. Implement capability to seamlessly run above mentioned modeling systems on conventional HPC and cloud (e.g., Amazon AWS) environments. Implement a cloud-based environment for post-processing, dissemination and model accuracy assessment. Evaluate current development and operations procedures, recommend, and implement tools and practices to increase efficiency, reliability, and repeatability. Required Skills

5+ years of technical experience in the following areas with a solid record in the development and application of numerical models: Knowledge of hydraulics and hydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, statistics or computer science Knowledge and understanding of application development using Agile and DevOps best practices (Code management, GitHub services, automated testing) Advanced scripting skills (e.g., Python, Shell, etc.) Experience with High Performance Computing on Linux/Unix clusters and cloud platforms such as AWS. Experience with numerical methods and demonstrated advanced coding abilities using programming languages, in particular FORTRAN and C. Modeling experience demonstrating broad understanding of modeling principles including model setup, calibration, and validation. Experience with collecting, processing and analyzing environmental observations. Solid background in probability and statistics. Skills with GIS tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and GDAL Experience using ADCIRC and WW3 desired. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in the United States at least 3 out of the last 5 years and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government facilities and systems.

Education

BS in ocean sciences, statistics, computer science, or mathematics related discipline, or equivalent. Advanced degree preferred.
