Job Description:

Overview

Each summer, CCS runs an intensive ten-week summer conference on applied mathematical problems (SCAMP). The 2024 SCAMP is tentatively scheduled to run from June 17, 2024 through August 23, 2024. The conference concentrates on one or two problem areas, typically related to mathematics, computing or communications, of critical importance to national security.

We typically invite a dozen or two visitors to join forces with our research staff for these conferences. Our visitors are a very strong group of researchers in mathematics and computer science ranging in experience from graduate students to emeritus professors. We also occasionally invite exceptionally strong undergraduates with independent research experience.

Typically, we have a mix of new and returning participants, depending upon individual proclivity for and interest in the particular problem set. Those having an outstanding talent for our problems may also be invited to join our permanent research staff.

The first two weeks are spent attending lectures introducing the problems and the current state of knowledge. Participants spend the remaining eight weeks working on whatever problem, or piece thereof, is of interest to them. Joint work is encouraged and informal bull sessions or lectures are used to present partial results or even half-baked ideas which often stimulate better ideas. Participants typically write papers and/or well-documented code as appropriate, and give summary presentations to an invited audience at the end of the summer.

Successful participants have represented a broad range of sub-fields within mathematics and computer science. However, an affinity for computation is more important than area of specialization: we are looking for researchers who have some experience with algorithms and programming and who are excited to actually compute things.

We support transparency, equity, and fairness in our compensation program and provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range based on data-driven market analysis for each position. While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent's experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is:
Continuing Students: $22.50-$39.50 Experienced Professional: $112,924-$263,335
Qualifications

Most SCAMP participants have a PhD in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field. Graduate students and exceptional undergraduates in such fields will also be considered. For junior applicants, past participation in summer internships with the Department of Defense (such as the NSA's Director's Summer Program or Graduate Mathematics Program) or similar qualifications are helpful.
