Job Description:

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The EIC Project has an opening for an Electrical Designer in the Design and Documentation Group.Under the technical direction of the group leader and the assigned engineer/scientist, the selected candidate will design and provide fabrication drawings for printed circuit boards and other components used for the particle accelerators, using computer aided design software. Assignments are usually complex and on a project basis designing specialized equipment, components, and systems. The candidate must be able to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform their design efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Create accurate and detailed printed circuit boards and library components to the IEEE-STD 315 standard.
Perform electrical design functions independently with general direction and review by an electrical engineer or scientist.
With the support of electrical engineers, will interpret and create drawings of circuit card assemblies, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and create and maintain standard library electronic parts.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education and Experience Years:
High school diploma or equivalent plus 12 years' relevant work experience; OR
A technical high school certification program (e.g., BOCES) plus 11 years' relevant work experience; OR
A technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, or associate degree in a technical field, or Brookhaven Lab CCI program completion plus 10 years' relevant experience; OR
Bachelor's degree in a technical field plus 6 years' relevant work experience.
Demonstrated competency using designing precision analog, RF, and high speed digital multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCB).
Experience with Mentor Graphic, PADS, Altium, and/or Allegro Cadence.
Good technical communication skills for close communication with engineers, reporting changes and modifications and with technical staff who install and maintain equipment.
High degree of initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform their design efforts.
Able to review and check the PCB and fabrication drawings of other design group personnel.
Experience with Microsoft Office

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with Mentor Graphic CAD software highly desired.
Must be able to follow ANSI Y32.2 IEEE-STD 315 and ASME Y14.5, as well as laboratory standards for schematic design, circuit board layout, fabrication, and assembly.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
Experience with AutoCAD.
Excellent interpersonal and time management skills.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Established in 1947 on Long Island, Upton, New York, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at the Lab. Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4,000 guest researchers annually. Brookhaven National Laboratory's role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of our scientific and local communities. The fundamental elements of the Laboratory's role in support of the four DOE strategic missions are the following: • To conceive, design, construct, and operate complex, leading edge, user-oriented facilities in response to the needs of the DOE and the international community of users. • To carry out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. • To develop advanced technologies that address national needs and to transfer them to other organizations and to the commercial sector. • To disseminate technical knowledge, to educate new generations of scientists and engineers, to maintain technical capabilities in the nation's workforce, and to encourage scientific awareness in the general public.
