Job Description:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks post-doctoral researcher to contribute to development of a suite of intelligent software tools to enable effective simulations of synchrotron light wave generation and propagation for realistic modelling of actual experiments using synchrotrons and free-electron lasers and to provide machine learning based feedback for experimental optimization and data processing. This includes work on the development of physical optics computation methods and software (both core libraries and user interfaces), simulations, benchmarking the results vs. experimental data, and potentially developing artificial intelligence-based algorithms to maximize the scientific output. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the design of new instruments and new experiments, as well as in commissioning and execution of such experiments at NSLS-II and other light source facilities.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop functions and libraries in C++ and Python languages for high-efficiency and high-fidelity simulation of coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) and ptychography experiments with SRW package and its Sirepo web browser interface.
• Contribute to development of experimental sample reconstruction libraries for CDI and ptychography experiments, making extensive use of Fourier optics and other methods traditionally employed for forward simulations.
• Contribute to development of software libraries for in-situ and in-lab metrology and other characterization of reflective and refractive X-ray optics.
• Collaborate on development of software utilities for automated design of X-ray optical beamlines, making extensive use of physical optics forward simulations, as well as optimization and ML methods.
• Port core computation methods used in SRW (physical optics) and Radia (3D magnetostatics) from CPU to GPU for the most efficient execution on individual computers equipped with GPU cards, as well as on large HPC clusters.
• Develop comprehensive documentation to all new methods developed in SRW code and make it readily available in all its interfaces.
• Improve availability and automated installation of SRW and Radia codes on different environments, extensively using dedicated utilities of GitHub.
• Publish results on development and use of the new software in peer-reviewed journal articles and report these results at scientific conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ph.D. degree in Physics, Mathematics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or other disciplines related to scientific software development within the past five years or will complete this degree prior to starting this position.
• Demonstrated experience and skills in development of algorithms and software for simulation of scientific instruments, data acquisition and analysis.
• Excellent programming skills in C++ and Python.
• Experience in collaborative software development and use of GitHub repositories.
• Self-motivation and creativity.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of experimental methods used at modern synchrotron light sources.
• Experience in simulation of experiments at light sources.
• Knowledge of Classical Electrodynamics.
• Experience with methods of optical metrology.
• Experience in optimization of X-ray beamlines at light sources.
• Knowledge and experience with AI/ML methods in algorithms and for software development.
• Analytical calculations skills.
• Good English speaking and writing skills.

Other Information:
BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events. Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70,200 - $116,200. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Established in 1947 on Long Island, Upton, New York, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at the Lab. Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4,000 guest researchers annually. Brookhaven National Laboratory's role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of our scientific and local communities. The fundamental elements of the Laboratory's role in support of the four DOE strategic missions are the following: • To conceive, design, construct, and operate complex, leading edge, user-oriented facilities in response to the needs of the DOE and the international community of users. • To carry out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. • To develop advanced technologies that address national needs and to transfer them to other organizations and to the commercial sector. • To disseminate technical knowledge, to educate new generations of scientists and engineers, to maintain technical capabilities in the nation's workforce, and to encourage scientific awareness in the general public.
