What You Will Do

The Waste Sampling Program within the Environmental Protection and Compliance's Environmental Stewardship Group (EPC-ES) consists of Waste Sampling Professionals that perform solid and liquid waste and environmental media sampling, spill cleanup confirmation sampling, sample preservation, and facilitate support for sample shipping functions.

This role will be filled at either the Environmental Tec 1 or Environmental Tec 2 level. Additional job responsibilities, outlined below, would be expected if a candidate is hired at the higher level.

Environmental Tec 1 ($47,400 - $73,200)

Under direction from the Analysis, Prevention, and Reduction Team Leader and Senior Waste Sampling Staff, you will assist in performing field and laboratory waste sampling operations. The Environmental Technician 1 is an entry-level position for those having some relevant experience, training and/or education related to waste and/or environmental sampling. At this level, you will learn job skills and become familiar with the policies, procedures, technical standards, and techniques required to safely and compliantly complete waste and environmental media sampling assignments. Tasks performed are routine and relatively simple, but may require the application of basic skills and technical principles related to the execution of field sample collection and maintenance of sampling equipment, containers, chemicals, and reagents in a safe and compliant manner. Directions given by the supervisor are specific and detailed, and work is closely supervised. A significant portion of sampling support activities will be conducted outdoors under varying weather conditions.

Environmental Tec 2 ($52,400 - $80,600)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Environmental technician 2 exercises independent judgement and frequently uses and applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform routine, and non-routine, waste and environmental media sampling. The incumbent will work under general supervision and follow established procedures for routine work to ensure scientifically valid and legally defensible sample data for waste characterization, verification, and/or certification purposes. Incumbent will also be responsible for providing defensible compliance documentation and records, such as: field logbooks, sample collection logs/field chain of custody forms, and shipping classification determination checklists. A supervisor will provide detailed instructions for new assignments and work will be reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy.



What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Basic aptitude to develop experience and technical knowledge in waste and/or environmental sampling and the ability to implement those principles.Basic skills for the development of experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous (including biohazards), radioactive, high explosives, and/or mixed wastes. Basic aptitude for skills with report generation and records management.Basic aptitude to follow standard operating procedures, integrated work documents, and/or other safety documents.Basic computer skills with general knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs (Word and Excel).Ability to obtain DOE 'Q' Clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

General knowledge and experience with waste and/or environmental sampling measures and associated requirements.General experience and technical knowledge in waste and/or environmental sampling and the ability to implement those principles.General experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous (including biohazards), radioactive, high explosives, and/or mixed wastes.General skills with report generation, presentation, and records management. General knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, policies, and procedures. General skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems related to waste and/or environmental sampling measures.General skill to follow standard operating procedures, integrated work documents, and/or other safety documents.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Active or transferable Q clearance.Working knowledge of LANL's organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities. Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification is desired.Experience working in a radiation area.Training/Certifications: Trained to the Environmental Protection Agency's analytical protocols in SW-846, "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste: Physical/Chemical Methods" and/or the standard methods and practices of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM).

Work Environment:

General work environment: outdoors, cold environment, hot environment 90 - 100 F, working alone, working extended shifts, operation of motor vehicles, operation of specialized heavy equipment (i.e. forklift).Specific work environment: Work in a noisy environment, work under unusual lighting conditions, work near electrical power supplies, work with biologic or infectious agents, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, work with explosives, work with vibrating equipment/machinery, work near machinery with moving parts.Chemical environment: Toxic chemicals, irritant chemicals.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
