The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is an advanced 3 GeV synchrotron light source operating at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. NSLS-II seeks a motivated Beamline Scientist for the In-Situ and Resonant (ISR) Scattering Beamline. The ISR Beamline, currently starting its seventh year of operation, provides state-of-the-art tender and hard x-ray scattering capabilities for studies of novel materials.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will be part of a diverse scientific program focused on x-ray scattering-based studies of functional surfaces and interfaces. Working closely with the ISR Team and the scientific user community, the selected candidate will assist with operations of the beamline, contribute to development/upgrade projects, establish relevant research projects, and develop opportunities for scientific collaborations that exploit the unique capabilities of the ISR beamline. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level depending on depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills that she or he brings to the position.

• Active contribution to the beamline operations and user support at the ISR beamline
• Innovate and upgrade the instrumentation to fulfill scientific demands and maintain beamline performance at the forefront of the field
• Develop an independent science program and work as member of a team to conduct experimental studies of functional surfaces and interfaces
• Collaborate with NSLS-II and BNL scientists and General Users for effective and innovative use of the ISR beamline

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, physics, environmental science or a related field
• At least two years of experience post PhD of research related to x-ray scattering, where a strong component of the qualification includes knowledge of surface and interface studies and associated analysis methods
• Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Prior experience of constructing and/or operating beamlines and providing user support in an x-ray user facility

About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Established in 1947 on Long Island, Upton, New York, Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Six Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at the Lab. Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4,000 guest researchers annually. Brookhaven National Laboratory's role for the DOE is to produce excellent science and advanced technology with the cooperation, support, and appropriate involvement of our scientific and local communities. The fundamental elements of the Laboratory's role in support of the four DOE strategic missions are the following: • To conceive, design, construct, and operate complex, leading edge, user-oriented facilities in response to the needs of the DOE and the international community of users. • To carry out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. • To develop advanced technologies that address national needs and to transfer them to other organizations and to the commercial sector. • To disseminate technical knowledge, to educate new generations of scientists and engineers, to maintain technical capabilities in the nation's workforce, and to encourage scientific awareness in the general public.
