Organizational Overview
Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a highly-skilled strategic leader for the IT Infrastructure and Operations department within the Information Technology Division (ITD) who is comfortable adapting to a dynamic environment with a track record of implementing technical and organizational change through careful analysis and collaboration with senior leadership.
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and ITD division manager, the Manager, ITD Infrastructure and Operations oversees enterprise networking and outside cable plant across campus, Microsoft 365 services, core IT platforms (virtualization, configuration management, operating systems, identity and access management, etc.), the Lab service desk, phones and communications, and more. The team supports both cloud-based and on-premise services, applications, and hardware. They own and drive infrastructure and operations strategy and execution, overseeing projects through completion. They work in close collaboration with business partners and key stakeholders while partnering with ITD leaders and managers.
Brookhaven Lab's Information Technology Division's (ITD) mission is to deliver safe, efficient operations that ensure the delivery of the Lab's research mission by:
Developing and deploying state-of-the-art information and computing systems in support of scientific research and business operationsProviding a reliable and secure, high-speed network infrastructure for scientific and business computingDeveloping a scientific computing infrastructure that can support the computing needs that are common among the scientific departmentsProviding support to scientific and administrative programs to help them address their unique computing problemsProviding a cost-effective, highly reliable, secure, and standardized computing infrastructurePromoting best practices across all areas of the organization, including platform support and customer serviceProviding cost-effective information services to the Brookhaven Lab community including Research Library, publications, and records management in support of the research mission and in compliance with contractual requirements
ITD includes experts in information technology (IT) infrastructure and operations, cyber security, business systems, data information, and information services, including records management and the Research Library. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who is resourceful and innovative, and who understands that collaboration with stakeholders from across the Laboratory is critical to ensure the right expertise and technology are in place to advance our mission of bringing science solutions to the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and direction while managing a department of supervisors, networking engineers, infrastructure engineers, and the service desk leader, including evaluating employee performance, setting department and individual expectations and goals, creating an inclusive environment, and focusing on development and teamworkBuild strong working relationships with laboratory leaders, jointly identifying strategic needs through shared business roadmap development and objective prioritization across resourcesAct as an organizational change agent while advocating for business transformation through technology and operational excellenceMaintain a continuous learning mindset, bringing modern thinking, practices, and research in technology management and solutions into the roleContinually improve work procedures and processes for the departmentAddresses unusual and non-recurring problems by devising approaches to assess the situation, developing options, and introducing new procedures or tools as necessary
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
15+ years of relevant experience including leading an IT infrastructure team of at least 10 full-time staffBachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or equivalent experienceExperience leading, developing, and supporting a team of infrastructure and operations professionalsExperience leading the management of cloud-based enterprise business and productivity systems (ex: Microsoft 365)Develop staff capability to meet future needs by building new competencies, maintaining an appropriately trained and motivated staff, and supporting their long-term professional developmentAbility to manage stakeholder and partner relationships, including experience consulting with internal departments to identify customer and strategic needs, integrating them into service and platform roadmaps and project objectivesExperience developing and communicating strategic direction, both functional and technicalIT portfolio management experience, including the drive to understand and reduce technical complexity, increase platform standardization, and streamline the portfolioExperience with organizational change management methods and practicesAbility to exercise independent judgment and discretion in overall project management by prioritizing, planning, and tracking project progressDemonstrated ability to prepare effective presentations for specific audiencesAbility to keep current of emerging technologies, best practices, and lessons learned while communicating to management, staff, and usersSkill in problem solving and decision making, with the ability to work effectively independently or as a team member within collaborative workspacesProfessional presence and proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with all levels of an organizationConscientious budget manager and steward of resourcesSome travel is required
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
Master's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, computer engineering, or other information system disciplinesKnowledge of business architecture concepts and practicesDemonstrated ability to provide leadership in a matrixed and hybrid work environmentLeading, creating or working in a DevOps or DevSecOps environment

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $187850 - $313050/year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
